From Rocky Start to Full Scholarship: Jordan Mayo’s Journey to Success

When Jordan Mayo first entered high school, he didn’t imagine he’d one day be heading to college on a full-ride scholarship. “I didn't have the best start in high school—if I’m being completely honest,” he says with a grin, reflecting on his rocky ninth-grade year. “I was a little rowdy... it kind of messed up my GPA a little bit through 10th grade year as well.”
But everything changed when Jordan joined the DeJoy Family Foundation Scholarship Program, through CISGG. That turning point helped Jordan find his focus, improve his grades, and ultimately land a $100,000 scholarship to Elon University where he is enrolled as a full-time first year student.
Since joining the program, Jordan has earned a place on the A/B Honor Roll consistently. “The support I received just made me want to keep going,” he says. “When you see people who genuinely care about you, there’s no point in stopping.”
Jordan is not only graduating high school but also completing college-level courses through GTCC. He plans to major in finance at Elon, with minors in marketing and psychology, combining his analytical skills and creative interests to shape a flexible future. “I was torn between finance and marketing,” he admits, “but I have more of an interest in marketing. I’m still testing the waters.”
Raised by his mother and the oldest of three siblings, Jordan is a first-generation college student. His younger brothers—still in middle and elementary school—now have a powerful example to follow.
Jordan credits much of his perseverance to his longtime mentor, Cedric Parker, who’s been in his life since elementary school through AAMI. “He always made sure I was okay mentally, checking on me and my family regularly. Just having that consistent presence meant the world.”
With graduation set for June 11th, Jordan’s story is a testament to the impact of mentorship, community, and the unwavering belief that every student—no matter their start—can succeed when given the right support.
