AAMI Summer Camp Returns 2022!

July 2022

Thanks to a new partnership with Boys and Girls Club, the African-American Mentoring Initiative (AAMI) summer camp returned this summer at the Caldcleugh Multicultural Arts Center. This brand new, long overdue collaboration with B&G came about because of the leadership of Michelle Gill Moffat, CIS board member and superintendent of youth services for the City of Greensboro Parks and Recreation. When informed that the learning camp was at risk of not having a home due to construction at Wiley Elementary, Michelle quickly reached out to B&G to align the B&G camp with AAMI. A win-win emerged as AAMI got a home for the summer and B&G campers get to participate in all AAMI activities including enrichment activities and trips.

This year, the camp is enhanced with a latest version of the Restorative Youth Sports practice and Wise Guys, an award-winning program of Children’s Home Society of North Carolina that promotes healthy relationships to teen males. By giving them a chance to rethink their understanding of masculinity and adulthood based on respect and responsibility rather than aggression and dominance, teen males begin to see that not all males conform to stereotyped expectations and begin to learn to make healthy choices in their relationships.
